Silk Care Guide
Mulberry silk is a delicate and luxurious fabric that deserves special attention to maintain its softness, shine and longevity. Whether you’re caring for a silk pillowcase, scrunchie, sleep mask or any of the other products in our Faya Silk Élégance collection, proper care is essential. Follow these instructions for washing, ironing and general care to ensure your silk items stay as beautiful as the day you received them.
Washing
To keep your silk products in perfect condition, it’s important to wash them with care.
Hand Wash or Gentle Machine Wash:
Hand Wash: Fill a basin with lukewarm water (approximately 30°C) and add a small amount of silk-friendly detergent.
Machine Wash: If using a machine, place your silk items in a mesh bag to protect them. Set the machine to a gentle cycle with cool water and use a detergent made specifically for silk or delicates.
Use the Right Detergent:
Always use a mild detergent designed for silk or delicates. Harsh detergents can damage the fibers and strip the silk’s natural shine.
Avoid Fabric Softener:
Fabric softeners can coat the fibers and reduce the natural luster of the silk. Instead, choose a pH-balanced detergent for the best results.
Do Not Wring or Twist:
After washing, gently squeeze out excess water, but do not wring or twist the fabric. This can distort the shape and texture of the silk.
Drying
Silk should never be placed in the dryer, as the high heat can cause irreparable damage to the delicate fibers. After washing, gently squeeze out excess water, never wring or twist. If necessary, gently pat out excess moisture with a clean towel.
Always air-dry your silk by laying it flat or hanging it in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause fading and weaken the fibers over time. This gentle drying process helps maintain the softness, color and longevity of your silk.
Ironing
Silk can easily be damaged by high heat, so it’s important to use a light touch when ironing.
Set the Iron to Low or Silk Setting:
Set your iron to the lowest heat setting or the “silk” setting. If your iron doesn’t have a silk setting, choose the “low heat” option.
Use a Pressing Cloth:
To avoid direct contact between the iron and the silk, use a pressing cloth or a clean cotton towel between the iron and the fabric.
Iron While Damp:
For best results, iron your silk items while they are still slightly damp. This will help avoid any creases or damage to the fabric.
Avoid Steam:
When ironing, avoid using steam directly on the silk, as the moisture can cause water spots or weaken the fibers over time.
STEAMING
Silk can be safely steamed, as long as you use gentle settings and proper technique. Hold the steamer at least 10-12 inches from the silk to avoid direct contact with steam. This will help release wrinkles without damaging the fabric. However, if you are concerned about the moisture, it’s always a good idea to use a pressing cloth and steam the fabric lightly from a distance.
Storage
Store your silk items in a cool, dry place. For optimal storage, use a breathable garment bag or box to protect them from dust and light. Avoid storing them in plastic bags for long periods, as this can trap moisture and lead to mildew.
By following these simple guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty and benefits of your luxurious mulberry silk for many years.
